Visa & Entry Requirements

Visa Application

Most travellers require a visa to enter Oman, which can be obtained online via the official eVisa portal. Depending on your nationality, you can obtain tourist visas for short stays or multiple entry visas for regular visits. Ensure that your passport is valid for at least six months.

Arrival & Immigration

Upon arrival, travelers must go through immigration, where officials verify passports, visas, and entry documents. Some nationalities are eligible for a visa on arrival, while others must have a pre approved visa. Be prepared to present travel details, including accommodation and return tickets, if requested.

Travel Insurance & Health Requirements

Although not usually necessary, travel insurance is recommended to cover medical conditions. Certain travellers might need specific vaccinations prior to travel. It is also advisable to check up to date health advice and entry requirements.

Best Time to Visit

Oman provides a variety of experiences throughout the year, but the best time to visit is determined by your preferred activities. The best months to visit cities, deserts and mountains are October through April, when temperatures are comfortable. Summers can be exceedingly hot, yet coastal regions are still enjoyable.

Winter (October-April)

Perfect for outdoor adventures like desert safaris, mountain treks, and city exploration.

Summer (May-September)

Best for visiting Salalah during the Khareef (monsoon) season, when the region turns lush and green.

Year Round Activities

Coastal destinations like Muscat and the Daymaniyat Islands are great for beach lovers and diving anytime.

Packing Tips

Lightweight & Modest Clothing

Cotton and linen are perfect for Oman's mild climate. While lightweight clothing is beneficial, it is essential to dress modestly, especially in public places. Women should bring a scarf to sacred sites, and both men and women should wear loose clothing to protect their shoulders and knees.

Sun Protection Essentials

Sun protection is essential year round due to the intense sunshine. Pack a wide brimmed hat, sunglasses, high SPF sunscreen and a reusable water bottle to remain hydrated. The desert and seaside locations can be quite hot, so wearing lightweight, long sleeved clothing helps prevent against sunburn.

Footwear for Every Activity

Bring comfortable walking shoes for city exploration and market visits, hiking boots for mountain hikes and water shoes for beach or snorkelling excursions. Oman's landscapes range from sandy deserts to rocky trails, so wearing appropriate footwear ensures a hassle free trip.

Travel Essentials & Gadgets

A universal adapter (Oman uses Type G plugs), a portable power bank, and a good quality camera are travel must haves. If you plan to visit remote areas, a small first aid kit, a flashlight, and extra snacks can be handy for unexpected situations.

Transportation & Getting Around

  • Car Rentals: The best way to explore Oman’s diverse landscapes, from deserts to mountains. Roads are well maintained, and a 4WD is recommended for off road adventures.
  • Taxis: Available in cities but do not have meters, so fares should be negotiated before starting the ride. Ride hailing apps are limited.
  • Public Buses: Operated by Mwasalat, buses provide affordable transport between major cities. Local minibusses (Baiza buses) serve short distance routes.
  • Domestic Flights: Ideal for long distance travel, flights connect Muscat with Salalah and other key destinations, saving time on extended journeys.
